The Ideal Foundation for Your Child's Development

In today’s world, many children face challenges with focus, posture, muscle tone, coordination, proprioception (body awareness), social skills, and emotional regulation. Traditional Kung Fu provides a proven, engaging solution — channelling energy positively while supporting brain development, hand-eye coordination, tactile awareness, and overall confidence.

Parents of children with learning differences, attention challenges, or motor skill needs often see remarkable improvements. One young student with learning disabilities, low muscle tone, proprioception issues, and social difficulties made such noticeable progress that teachers at a well-known Johannesburg school for children with learning differences asked the parents what they were doing differently. Regular Kung Fu training had helped transform posture, concentration, coordination, and social engagement.

All training at Gui Yi Martial Arts is guided by Wu De (武德 Wǔdé) — the moral and ethical foundation of martial arts. We cultivate morality of deed through humility (谦虚 Qiānxū), respect (尊敬 Zūnjìng), righteousness (正义 Zhèngyì), trust (信用 Xìnyòng), and loyalty (忠诚 Zhōngchéng). We also develop morality of mind through will (意志 Yìzhì), endurance (忍耐 Rěnnài), perseverance (恒心 Héngxīn), patience (耐心 Nàixīn), and courage (勇敢 Yǒnggǎn).

Jow Ga and YMAA Traditional Systems Adapted for Children

We draw from two authentic lineages:

  • Jow Ga Kung Fu (周家功夫 Zhōujiā Gōngfū) – Dynamic and powerful, blending strength, agility, and practical movement in a fun, engaging way for kids.
  • YMAA (楊氏武術協會 Yángshì Wǔshù Xiéhuì) Shaolin Kung Fu – Structured Northern Long Fist and Southern White Crane influences, taught through playful forms, basic stances, kicks, punches, and coordination drills designed for young bodies and minds.

Classes focus on fun, safe progression with age-appropriate games, partner exercises, and creative movement rather than competition or fighting. The emphasis is on self-discovery: cultivating each child’s unique inner strengths, balance, and respect for self and others.

A Holistic Path to Confidence, Fitness & Growth

Traditional Kung Fu training instils far more than physical skills — it nurtures the whole child:

Physical Development

  • Improves muscle tone, posture, and core strength
  • Enhances hand-eye coordination, balance, and proprioception
  • Builds coordination, flexibility, and healthy energy release
  • Supports tactile awareness and body control — especially beneficial for children with motor or sensory challenges

Brain Development & Focus

Martial arts training strengthens neural pathways, improves concentration, and supports executive function. Research shows it helps children with ADHD and learning differences by boosting focus, impulse control, and cognitive control through structured, repetitive yet engaging movement.

Emotional & Social Growth

Children learn emotional regulation, resilience, and self-confidence in a supportive group setting. They develop respect for others, make friends, and experience the joy of personal progress rather than comparison. It is not about “fighting” but about discovering and cultivating their own powerful abilities.

Character & Life Skills

Through consistent practice, children naturally build perseverance, patience, courage, and self-discipline — qualities that translate to better school performance, stronger relationships, and greater readiness for life’s challenges.

Parents frequently report improvements in posture, attention span, emotional steadiness, and overall happiness. This is more than an activity — it is one of the most valuable gifts you can give your child as they grow.
